Tinnitus (Pronounced Tin-It-Tus) is basically a condition in which people tend to suffer in silence from because it is something which is very difficult to understand and accustomised to for the others who have never suffered from such a problem themselves.

Tinnitus is basically an unusual or abnormal noise that rings in your ears internally and not caused by the external environment that you find yourself in. Things About Tinnitus You Should Know About

Tinnitus is a condition where we hear an unusual or abnormal noise coming from within our ears. Tinnitus noise is not a constant 24 hours condition but could also come on and off intermittenly for sufferers.

Common Symptoms Of Tinnitus

The main one is basically the noise we hear from within our ears. It can come in the form of a buzzing, ringing, hissing or whistling sound most commonly but may appear in various other forms as well.

How To Diagnose Tinnitus

The best thing you should do is to first consult a professional otologist (Ear Specialist) and let them examine your condition. The doctors will then find out about your past and any medication you have been consuming.

They will then perform a standard ear examination with an otoscope to access the condition of your ear drums. The purpose to to check for any scarring or inflammation and also if the ear drums are moving or in tact.

They will usually then proceed to check on your eyes as well as this could also cause tinnitus to surface for some sufferers.

Tinnitus is not a disease but a symptom resulting from a range of underlying causes that can include ear infections, foreign objects or wax in the ear, nose allergies that prevent (or induce) fluid drain and cause wax build-up, and injury from loud noises. Tinnitus can also be caused by hearing impairment and as a side-effect of some medications. Some cases of tinnitus are medically unexplained.[3][not in citation given]

As tinnitus is often defined as a subjective phenomenon, it is difficult to measure using objective tests, such as by comparison with noise of known frequency and intensity, as in an audiometric test. The condition is often rated clinically on a simple scale from "slight" to "catastrophic" according to the practical difficulties it imposes, such as interference with sleep, quiet activities, and normal daily activities.[4]

Tinnitus is common. About one in five people between 55 and 65 years old report tinnitus symptoms on a general health questionnaire and 11.8% on more detailed tinnitus-specific questionnaires.[5]

You might hear a whistling, a ringing, a hissing, a thumping, or other kind of sound, but the thing that distinguishes it is that it is completely inside your head, and so has nothing to do with external noise. In other words, only you can hear it.

Strangely, in a study which entailed putting people into a sound-proof box where they couldn’t hear any external noises, it was discovered that they all could hear some form of internal noise.

The thing with tinnitus is that the normal filtering that goes on to stop you from hearing the internal noises has been damaged in some way, so that now you do hear it, and this can be very distressing.

Damage can occur in several ways. For example, I hit my head during a faint and gave myself tinnitus. Certain medicines can also cause it. But by far the most common cause is exposure to loud noise. Sadly, many young people are unaware of this, and end up with tinnitus from visiting a nightclub where the music was very high, or even from playing their ipods too loudly. Sometimes, depending on the amount and level of exposure, the internal noises will disappear after a few days or weeks, but for some the damage will be permanent.

Rarely, tinnitus can be one of the symptoms of certain other condtions, which is why it is a good idea to see a doctor, just to rule out anything else which may be causing it.

While there is no cure at the moment, tinnitus can sometimes be alleviated by things like drug treatment, maskers (which produce white noise), ginko biloba (a herb found in the health food stores), or by concentrating very hard on other things so that you train the brain not to listen as much to the noise. But what works for one person may not work for another, and it’s trial and error as to which method will help an individual.
