Tinnitus cause and relief?

A few years back, when I was a teenager, I went to my doctor because I had a loud clicking sound in my ears every time I swallowed. He said it was from clogged eustachian tubes and had me stand over a running tea kettle every night for a while. That didn’t do anything other than make me look silly, so I went back and he sent me to an ENT specialist, who prescribed Nasacort spray. I sprayed this up my nose for several months but it never helped at all so I stopped getting it and got used to the clicking. The doctors suggested it was from the shape of my eustachian tubes, not allowing proper drainage, and nothing could be done about it.

About a year ago, when I was 21, my ears began to have a low constant ring. Also when I get sick, they get sore. I went back to my doctor and he said it was the same problem I had a few years back… my lack of proper drainage. He just had me try the tea kettle thing again and prescribed me something, but the Rite-Aid pharmacist said that the stuff he prescribed was available in over-the-counter cough medicine and I should just buy that (which I was kind of skeptical of, does that sound right?), and told me to come back if it didn’t work (I never did, I’m not really happy with him).

The ringing is still here, and it is especially intense now because I am sick. I don’t notice it most of the time even though it is constant, but it is worse when I lie down, and makes it kind of hard for me to fall sleep at times.

What should I do about this? Is my doctor probably correct about the cause (he didn’t really check me out, just looked at my record)? I’m also worried because I have the clicking and now the ringing, and I don’t know what could happen next if anything.

Thank you!

Hi

Sorry to hear about your problem – I have something that is partly caused by a eustachian tube problem. My doctor is insistent that it’s because of a broken nose – thing is I’ve never had a broken nose!

I’ve looked into it a bit more, because I have permanent white noise in my left ear. Sometimes it drives me mad, sometimes I don’t notice it. I have found ways to reduce so that it’s almost never there, (I’ve put a link below) although there isn’t an actual cure.

Important thing to understand is that tinnitus itself isn’t a condition, it’s a symptom of something else. And the good news is it’s very rarely anything serious. When you’re sick, it probably will get worse – I use a spray called nanonex when mine gets worse, but I’m based in the UK so it’s probably called something different.

Like I say, there are things you can do to reduce the noises. It sounds like your doctor is being much help.

Good luck, and I hope it improves.

  1. If I were you I would look on the internet for a forum about this ( ask questions there ) that a specialist can help you with.Ask your Doc to refer you to a ENT again, a different one.

  3. I suffered from this for many years and the more I went to the doctor, the more medications got prescribed and the louder the sound got. What helped me was to get off all prescribed meds. I started detoxing my body and found some natural remedies and the ringing in my ear has stopped!

I am now a firm believer in trying natural cures to get relief. You may want to give it a try to cure ringing ears.

  4. Determine the cause of the tinnitus by seeing your doctor for a proper diagnosis. The list of causes is extensive and includes head injury, vascular problems, ear infections, tumors, loud noise, hearing loss and the side effects of medications. The treatment for tinnitus depends on the cause. Note that since some medications can cause tinnitus, the doctor may also check for this and change your prescription accordingly.
