Tinnitus?(ringing in ears) who has it!?

Im 17 and have had tinnitus due to noise damage for just under a year now. it makes me depressed and unhappy. the ringing noise fairly loud and i worry alot about it, i know i need to try not to think about it but that is so hard! i just need some people to help me feel better about it. how many people have tinnitus? tell me if you have it and how you get your tinnitus relief! i just need some advice to make me feel better about it, good news only please!
and is there still a chance that it will go away if it was due to noise damage? im only 17!

advice please :)

i dont even go to gigs or concerts anymore because im scared the noise will get louder i even bought some custom earplugs and im still scared.
help me!

(ive tried all the vitamins and supplements they dont seem to work. )
i saw a specialist last year he said nothing could be done but just to not think about. that doesnt help! :(

Hey man, Im 20 years old and I began having tinnitus when I was 19 after I left a club one night….

man oh man, I was freaking out, getting pissed and mad, and I didnt know what to do about the freaking noise I had in my left ear…

I learned to cope with it, I go about my normal every day activities and I invested in some good ear plugs that are practically invisible when I go places…

I can still go to clubs, parties and other loud events…I just got used to wearing those ear plugs because it’s better to not cause any further damage to the ear…

I went to audiologist and he told me that since I had no hearing damage(according to audio test) that the tinnitus would subside in about 6 months….well….it didnt, sad to say but Im ok now…

I leave that behind me, I researched it, learned about it, read other peoples stories and learned that I am not alone, and that some have it much worse to the point of depression with thoughts of suicide…..

now thats bad….

I almost immediately felt better about it. My noise is still there and of course I only hope that maybe one day it will go away on its own or that there will be a cure for it….but for now I just live my life and wait.

Try to stay around background noise to take the focus off the sound…go to sleep with some music on(that helps me).

It really is terrible at first because you just think negative, but honestly, try to stay positive and keep your cool…

trust me, that will help you a lot.

  1. Your probably need to go see a specialist. They may have something for you but I’m not sure if they have anything for tinnitus but I could be wrong!

  2. I know just how you feel!

My damage was done by Deep Purple many years ago! I should have sued! Well, I played in bands myself for 30 years, so that could have contributed!

The specialist was actually correct, you have to train yourself not to hear it otherwise it will drive you crazy.

Not sure if yours is like mine, but as well as the ringing I get a loud buzz/crash sound when I hear a loud noise. That’s worse than the ringing.

I’m not sure if yours will go away, it might, with time and without further damage. I hope it does, but meantime, don’t let it get to you (easy to say, I know), but hey, you’re still very young so concentrate on living a good, full life to take your mind off the problem.

  3. I first got Tinnitus just after my 21st birthday five years ago, it came on late one night out of the blue, I knew it wasn’t due to listening to loud music because I never listened to music loudly or went to concerts etc, my doctor originally said it was cos my ears needed cleaning and laughed but when the nurse went to clean them they weren’t very waxy at all and then the cleaning them made it even worse, I saw a specialist who wasn’t very helpful and spoke like he was just telling me I had a common cold. Apparently my hearing is above average so not only are my ears extra sensitive to everyday sounds like hoovers etc that don’t bother most people, but also I can pick up on internal noises within the brain that its believed everyone has but not all can hear. I was referred to a hearing therapist who gave me tips on how to cope with the sounds, at first I thought I was going to go mad but five years on and i’ve coped very well, I stopped seeing the therapist after only a few sessions as I was dealing with it well and once I was reassured that the Tinnitus was not life threatening, my brain seemed to accept it more and now I only notice it on really bad days when i’m feeling very sad. The worst bit was learning how to unfocus from the sounds at night when I needed to go to sleep and when it goes very quiet outside. I bought a sound generator which plays natural sounds to get you off to sleep and projects colours on the ceiling, the sounds got so on my nerves though that I actually preferred the sounds in my ears and learn’t to fall asleep naturally but it does take time. I wear transparent ear plugs whenever i’m in a noisy environment, they are discreet so no one notices them and I love watching a good movie or keeping myself busy as you barely notice the sounds at all in the end as your brain is too preoccupied with other things. If you wear earplugs in noisy enviroments there is no reason why the Tinnitus would get worse but if you are worried just take regular breaks outside or in the washroom say of a Pub/club etc. There is no known cure, some people try various treatments but I think its a waste of money, the secret is to allow your brain to accept the noises, that they are normal(for you) and now a part of you and you’ll find that eventually your brain will not give it much attention, your young so believe me you will have lots of distractions and it will get better, it might not seem like it at the moment but remember you’re not alone hon!

  4. I’ve got it. I am a musician and I stand next to some big speakers and in front of the bass players amps and junk. I really only get the ringing during the 3rd hour of the gig and after the gig is over.

Try drinking some good quality omega 3 fish oil capsules and wear good quality ear plugs throughout the day. It has helped me.

  5. I’ve had tinnitus for 32 years. Mine is caused by nerve damage (coclear hydrops) from loud noises. I used to turn the music up quiet loud when I was younger, so now I’m suffering the consequences.

You do get used to it, but I know how terrifying and annoying it can be at times. And YES, it can make you sad, if you continue to focus on the noise. You must distract yourself with other things to do.There’s really nothing the doctors could do for it but tell me to learn to live with it…and I have, to a point where now, I barely notice it anymore.

Tinnitus is not life threatening, as loud as the noise can be.
    Here’s a link for you that I found: http://www.medicinenet.com/tinnitus/article.htm

At first my tinnitus in 1977 was so loud…it sounded like the buzzing on a telephone receiver. It worried me as yours does. I did have several tests that came back negative and was given prescription antihistamines. Those did nothing for me at all! You have to learn to divert your attention away from the noise.

I was given prescriptions for valium, because it interferred with my sleep. Valium did help, for awhile. But you can get very dependent on it. I don’t take it any more. My tinnitus now, on most days, is barely audible…sounds very soft. So after awhile, maybe this will happen to you. I don’t think it will take 32 years though. Probably a few years the most.

Stress can aggravate tinnitus. Learn relaxation techniques if possible.

Good luck to you. I know what you’re going through right now and hope this gives some support for you. It will get better. AND you wont die from it!

  7. I’ve had tinnitus since 1980 i was shooting my 44 magnum revolver in a small encloesure at a shooting range. I felt like someone gave me a slap on my left ear and thats when the tinnitus began.
There is’nt a day or night that goes by without me haveing to listen to that high piched sound in my left ear,oh i have been to many different kinds of doctors and Specialests to no avail. I was percribed Vallium 5mg once a day and have been takeing it for the last 29 years but only at night time around midnight. I allways have the tv or radio on at night and that does help as a distraction.
I must say after haveing ths ringing sound so long i have become used to it because it’s the same ole same ole day in and day out.
You can buy what is called a masker.you wear it like a hearing aide wtrh an adjustable volume control….it sounds like lisetning to a sea shell and some people will get theirselfs a white noise cd to serve as distractons. As for me the tv left on all night works wel for me and through the day i hardley even think about it anymore.
Good luck and happy Easter to you

  8. I feel for you, as I have had this tinnitus for many, many years. Sometimes it drives me nuts. I have found that it is worse in a totally quiet room. Get one of those homedics "waterfall and nature sounds" type of devices, and set it to play "ocean" wave sounds or something similar. That helps a lot, especially if you get bothered at night when you want to sleep!
There is no cure for tinnitus, but they can build a masking device that emits a sound that will mask the pitch that bothers you most. It is sort of like a hearing aid that gives out a small sound to mask the other sound. The university ENT department (whatever university medical school is near you) would know about this device.
Sorry you have this, yeah it really sucks. But it could be worse. You could be blind or deaf or something, or be in constant pain or have cancer. So no matter how bad something is there is always something you can be grateful for.
